Peptides are biological molecules that can lose their structural integrity — and therefore their research utility — when exposed to heat, moisture, light, or repeated freeze-thaw cycles. Proper storage is not optional; it's the difference between reliable research data and wasted material.
Temperature Requirements
Lyophilised (Freeze-Dried) Peptides
- Long-term storage: −20°C or colder
- Shelf life: Months to years when stored correctly
- Key rule: Keep sealed until ready to reconstitute
Reconstituted Peptides
- Storage: 2–8°C (standard refrigerator)
- Shelf life: Typically 2–4 weeks, depending on the peptide and solvent used
- Key rule: Never refreeze a reconstituted peptide
Pre-Filled Pens & Nasal Sprays
- Storage: −20°C before first use
- After first use: 2–8°C
- Key rule: Follow the specific handling instructions provided with the device
Common Storage Mistakes
1. Leaving peptides at room temperature In the UAE, ambient temperatures regularly exceed 35°C. Even brief exposure can begin degradation. Always move peptides to cold storage immediately upon receipt.
2. Repeated freeze-thaw cycles Each freeze-thaw cycle damages peptide structure. If you need multiple aliquots, divide the reconstituted solution into single-use portions before freezing.
3. Using the wrong solvent Bacteriostatic water (BAC water) is the standard reconstitution solvent for most peptides. Using plain sterile water, saline, or other solvents can affect stability and shelf life.
4. Exposure to light Many peptides are light-sensitive. Store in opaque containers or wrap vials in aluminium foil if your storage doesn't exclude light.
5. Contamination during handling Use sterile technique when reconstituting vials. Contamination introduces bacteria that degrade the peptide and compromise research results.
